Why A Riviera
(From the Online Discussion List)

In 1967, for my high school senior prom, my best friend Doug Overhoff and I double dated in his Mom's beautiful new '67 Riviera. Doug's dad owned Overhoff Buick in St. Louis, and always had a new Riviera at home for special occasions. The fact that we were trusted enough to enjoy this beautiful car that night made an impression on me. (The prom wasn't bad either, as I remember.)

It was a beauty, Riviera gold, and the first time I had heard FM Stereo inside a car...front and rear, instead of left and right, kinda cool! I was hooked, and now realize that I have wanted one ever since.

Nearly 35 years later, I have discovered an almost identical '67 Riviera, in very good condition, and low mileage. It had just recently been donated to the Salvation Army by the family of a local owner, following his death. I spoke with his widow after obtaining this wonderful car, and feel that I am carrying on their enjoyment, as I share in the enjoyment of my senior prom back in 1967!

Best wishes,

Mac

My Dad had Buicks from the time I was 9 years old, before that he was an Olds owner. He had a 54 and a 57(his first new car), a 59, and a 61, both Invictas. In the small town that I grew up in, Olson Buick was the only dealer, and Dad was probably their best customer. I graduated in 1964, and got a job at there as a grease monkey, lube and oil changes, tires, pump gas and other drudge jobs that needed doing.

In late August, before the new car introduction (remember those?) we went to Chicago for the Buick dealer's introduction. They had the new models that we could test drive, and of course, the Skylark GS was the favorite. The line was long to drive these, so I went to another track. There they had a Sahara Mist Riviera, with custom saddle interior. It was love at first sight. I must have driven the thing a dozen times that day.

I brought the Riviera brochures home for Dad, and told him that he HAD to get one. He had his '61 Invicta for almost 4 years, and he would be in the market for a new Buick. A month or so later, he ordered a Sahara Mist Rivie with a custom saddle interior. When it came in, I had to clean it up. It was beautiful. The worst part of it was installing the dealers plate below the trunk lid. In those days, they weren't decals, and you had to drill holes to install it. I kept putting this off for as long as I could, hoping that Mr. Olson wouldn't notice. He did, and I finally had to spoil the effect of the script emblem on the right with a block lettered dealer tag on the left.

Dad loved the car, it was his favorite. He finally got rid of it after a trip to New York in the summer. In Wisconsin, you don't need air conditioning, but that trip convinced him that he needed it. The 65 was traded for a 69 Rivie.

That's why it has to be a 65 Rivie for me.

Hi Guys,
Excellent question. My family has been a Buick family for a long time. My parents honeymooned in a 39 Special sedan, my aunt and uncle in a 37 Special four door sedan. My aunt always had Buicks as she taught school in Cheyenne and commuted to Greeley, Colorado to take care of her mom, and Weld County Garage serviced her cars.

As for me, a older lady on the next block over from my folks house in Lakewood had the nicest silver 63 Riv I have seen, then or now. She drove this until the late 80s when she passed on, her nephew has it now. On a trip to western Pennsylvania for a family reunion, my uncle Bill came from Long Island with a 66 Riv GS Black, no vinyl roof, black interior. My uncle Bud, a oil man from Washington Pa. had his 66 Jag Mark 10, Green with tan interior. I was 10 in 66. I vowed one day to own a car like those two, and I have a 66 GS, black on black, and a 66 Mark10 green with tan interior. That fall my best friend Bob Horton's Mom bought a burgundy mist Skylark convertible from Denver Buick. Bob still has it, and since his Mom wouldnt sell me it I have a 67 Skylark convertible in Blue Mist. This was my first Buick.

I have had five 67s, a 63, a 85 T Type. In addition to my GS I have a 84 T Type which is a semi daily driver.Fun car.I also have a 69 Riv for sale if anyone knows someone looking for a solid project.

I cant picture myself without having a Riv of somekind in the driveway.
